An Aussie Sits Beside a Haystack of Shredded Newspaper
Turned away from the camera with his ears back, a blue merle Australian Shepherd sits beside a huge heap of shredded newspaper that rises like a haystack. His marbled coat of silver, black, and white fur looks soft in the evening light, and one pale blue eye glances back toward the mess. The heap is almost as tall as he is, and it seems to have taken serious effort and quite a lot of enthusiasm.
Behind him the living room is dim and cluttered, with a basket of laundry, a pair of slippers, tangled cords, a chew toy, and a couch with a blanket thrown over it. Paper scraps fly out in every direction like confetti after a party.
Australian Shepherds are bright, energetic herding dogs who need a lot of exercise and a job to do. When they do not get it, they sometimes channel that energy into shredding, chasing, and herding anything that moves. A long walk, a game of fetch, a training session, or a puzzle toy can help tire him out. Make sure he cannot reach newspaper with ink that is not meant to be eaten, and sweep up any shreds that he might swallow. If your dog eats a lot of paper or seems sick, call your vet.
He knows the room looks like a snowstorm, and he is not quite ready to meet your eyes. He did, however, make a very impressive pile.
