The Water Bowl Was Full This Morning. The Spaniel Made Other Plans.
A golden-buff Cocker Spaniel sits quietly on a wet wooden floor, her long ears falling to either side, and she looks off to the side as though a very interesting bird has landed outside. In front of her, a steel water bowl lies on its side, and a shining puddle spreads across the floor all the way to a pair of slippers and a basket of laundry. Sunlight flashes across the water. A backpack and a few dog toys sit against the wall. We'll call her Marmalade, and she's well aware of the flood.
Dogs tip over water bowls for several reasons. Some love to splash, some are playing, and some are simply bored or trying to cool off. A heavy, wide-based bowl or a spill-proof design can help, as can placing the bowl on a mat or in a tray to protect the floor. Fresh water should always be available, and any dog that suddenly drinks far more than usual should be checked by a vet. Cocker Spaniels have long ears that can droop into water bowls, and a narrow bowl can keep those ears dry.
Marmalade seems calm, though a bit guilty. She's hoping the puddle will dry before anyone notices, which is unlikely. A towel and a laugh will take care of it, and she'll probably be offered a fresh bowl in a place far from the slippers.
