One Garbage Bag in the Yard and a Very Surprised Black Pug

AI imagepugcaught in the actbackyard

Midway through a backyard raid, a black Pug has frozen in place with both round eyes bulging at the camera. She's standing right on top of a torn black garbage bag, and banana peels, wrappers and vegetable scraps are strewn across the grass around her. A wooden fence runs behind her, a blue watering can leans against a flowerpot, and spring light falls across the lawn. Her little wrinkled face looks utterly stunned. We'll call her Olive Oil, and she hopes this doesn't count.

Pugs are curious, food-loving dogs with great appetites and a talent for looking pitiful, and they are prone to gaining weight if they eat too much. That makes a garbage bag a very tempting target. Trash often includes things that can make a dog sick, from spoiled food to bones, wrappers and sharp edges, and banana peels can cause stomach upset. Keep garbage in a bin with a secure lid or in a closed garage, and bring bags out on collection day only. Pugs should also stay cool outdoors, because their short noses make them prone to overheating. If your dog eats something unusual, call your vet.

Olive Oil isn't moving a muscle. She has the look of a dog who just heard the back door open, and her eyes say that nothing is wrong. The yard is a mess and her cheeks are somewhat full, but at least the evidence is easy to spot.
