The Royal Gardener Is a Rottweiler Who Guards Every Rose
This gardener takes the roses very seriously. A black and tan Rottweiler stands in a dark garden-shed light, wearing a soft green cap decorated with a small sprig of flowers, a ruffled lace collar and a green embroidered coat under a rough linen apron. In the crook of one paw he carries a wicker basket overflowing with pink, cream and deep red roses. His expression is calm and watchful, like a guard who happens to have a very important delivery.
The contrast is the heart of the picture. A big, powerful dog holds delicate blooms with almost comic care, and the petals are painted with such softness that they seem to glow against the dark coat of his apron.
Rottweilers have a reputation for strength, but well-raised ones are often loyal, confident and affectionate with their families. The breed has a long history of herding and pulling carts for butchers in Europe, so they enjoy having a job to do. They do best with early socialization, consistent and positive training and plenty of exercise, both physical and mental. A big dog needs a confident handler, and clear routines help a lot. If you ever try gardening with a dog nearby, remember that some plants and fertilizers can be harmful to pets, so check with your vet or a local plant list before planting.
Whatever the roses are for, the palace staff may want to stay on this gardener's good side. He clearly cares about every single petal.
