The Dalmatian Princess Has Pearls, Lace and One Big Secret
Rows of pearls, a wide lace collar and a gleaming gold crown: the Dalmatian princess has dressed for the occasion. Her white coat is scattered with perfect black spots, and one dark-edged ear folds forward as she looks over her shoulder at the painter. Her gown is deep blue velvet worked with swirling gold thread, and a puff of cream silk peeks out at the sleeve. The background is brown and shadowy, which makes her bright white face glow.
Everything about her pose is poised and polite, but her eyes are curious and alert, as if a footman had just whispered that there was a ball outdoors that needed chasing.
Dalmatians have a distinctive look, and a fun fact is that puppies are born white, with the spots appearing as they grow. Historically they ran alongside carriages, which helps explain why the breed is so energetic and has so much stamina. Today they usually need lots of daily exercise, training and companionship, and they can get bored or mischievous without enough to do. They are generally loyal and friendly with their families. Some Dalmatians are prone to certain urinary and hearing problems, so it is wise to talk with your vet and a responsible breeder or rescue about health.
The princess may be wearing pearls, but we suspect her favorite jewel is still a good long run through the royal gardens.
