The Saint Bernard Officer Wore a Helmet With Plumes Like Sails

A silver helmet topped with a great fan of white and red plumes sits on the head of this Saint Bernard, looking a bit like a ship in full sail. Under the brim, soft brown eyes and a deep brown mask give the face a gentle, thoughtful air, and the white ruff at his neck is crisp and round. The coat is a rich red with gold knotwork on the chest and gold epaulettes on the shoulders. A misty green background lets the plumes stand out. Captain Clover is huge and soft, and likely to charge only at the sound of a dinner bell.

Saint Bernards trace back to the Swiss Alps, where monks kept large dogs at a mountain hospice. They became famous for their calm strength and strong sense of direction in snowy country. Today, they are known as sweet, patient and affectionate family dogs. Because they grow very large, puppies need careful feeding and gentle exercise to protect growing joints, and a vet can guide you. They drool, shed and prefer cooler weather, so avoid hot afternoons. They also need space to stretch out and a family that doesn't mind a big, warm head resting in their lap.

A cavalry officer without a horse is a little odd, but this one has presence enough for both. The plumes flutter and the dog stays composed.
