Five Cream Puppies Followed the Sunbeam the Way Sunflowers Do
Golden afternoon light streams through the glass and pools across a deep wooden windowsill, and five cream puppies have followed it like little sunflowers. They're sprawled in an overlapping heap, heads on backs and paws on noses, every one of them sound asleep. The pup closest to the window rests his cheek right against the warm wood, while the one at the bottom has his nose tucked into his paws. The plaster wall behind them glows warm, and a potted plant catches the edge of the light.
Dogs, especially small and short-coated ones, love a sunny spot for the same reason we love a warm blanket. Sunbeams offer easy, comfortable heat, and toy breeds like the Chihuahua often seek them out. Still, it's wise to make sure a pup can move away from the heat whenever it wants. Spaces near windows can warm up quickly in summer, and puppies can overheat if they're stuck in a hot spot without water or shade. Window safety matters too: a dog resting on a sill should never be near an open window without a secure screen, since a curious pup could tumble out. A pet bed placed in a sunny corner on the floor is a safer, cozy alternative.
These five have found the perfect balance for now, enough warmth to drift off and enough of each other to stay snug.
Some puppies chase their tails. These chase the sunshine, then nap in it.
