A Slipper Went Missing and Two Dachshund Pups Looked Very Innocent
A single brown slipper has become the most valuable object in the living room. Two chocolate Dachshund puppies have each claimed an end, noses pressed into the soft fabric, and neither is willing to give an inch. Their ears droop forward, their eyes are fixed on the prize, and the lamp glowing behind them makes the whole scene look like a tiny, cozy standoff.
Chewing is how puppies explore the world, and it gets especially intense while their baby teeth are being replaced by adult ones, usually in the first several months. Soft slippers are tempting because they smell like a favorite person and feel good on sore gums. Rather than scolding, offer something better to gnaw on: a sturdy rubber toy, a rope, or a chew made for puppies. Trade the slipper for the toy with a cheerful voice and plenty of praise, and the lesson sticks faster. Keep shoes and socks in a closet or on a high shelf during the chewy phase, because swallowed fabric can cause serious trouble. If a puppy seems to be in real discomfort or swallows something he shouldn't, call your vet right away.
As for these two, the slipper may not survive the afternoon, but the tug-of-war looks perfectly friendly. Somebody will end up with the heel, and somebody will end up with the toe.
