The Picnic Blanket Had Only One Guest, and He Had Very Long Ears
A red-and-white gingham blanket makes a fine stage for a chocolate Dachshund puppy who is clearly in no hurry. He lies flat with his chin low, his long silky ears spread out and his front paws neatly stretched in front of him. His soft eyes look off to one side, as if he just spotted something interesting but decided it could wait until after a rest.
Picnic season is wonderful for dogs, but a few habits keep everyone safe. Always bring fresh water and a bowl, because dogs overheat more easily than people. Offer shade, and avoid hot pavement or sand that can burn little paws. Watch the food, too: grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions and anything with the sweetener xylitol are harmful to dogs, so keep them out of reach of a curious nose. Young Dachshunds should also be protected from long jumps and rough stairs, so carry a puppy with one hand under the chest and the other supporting his hindquarters. Bring a favorite chew or toy and a small blanket so he has his own spot to settle.
On this particular afternoon the blanket belongs to him. The sandwiches, if there were any, would be at serious risk. For now he is soaking up the day, ears flat and heart calm, and nobody has the heart to move him.
