Four Dapple Dachshund Puppies Napped Beneath the Christmas Tree
Pine branches hang over the carpet, tiny lights twinkle, and four dapple Dachshund puppies sleep in a furry heap on the floor beneath. Their coats are a mix of marbled gray, chestnut and glossy black with tan markings. One has his head flat on the boards, another curls around his sibling, and all four look as if Christmas morning has already come and gone.
Holiday trees are magical to a puppy, but they come with hazards that are worth planning for. Real pine needles can be sharp and may upset a stomach, and tree water can contain preservatives or bacteria, so cover the stand. Tinsel, ribbon and glass ornaments are tempting and dangerous when chewed or swallowed, and electric cords should be tucked away. Some holiday plants, including mistletoe and poinsettia, are best kept out of reach too, and chocolate treats should never be shared with a dog. A gate or play pen around the tree can keep a curious Dachshund safe, and a soft bed nearby gives him a better place to nap. If you suspect that a puppy has swallowed something unsafe, call your vet right away.
Tonight these four look like a living ornament themselves. The tree glows, the house is quiet, and the best gift under it is a pile of sleeping puppies. The presents can wait until morning, and so can the wagging tails that will surely follow once these four wake up.
