Five Basset Hound Puppies Scattered Across a Carpet of Autumn Leaves
Fallen leaves in orange, gold and brown cover the ground, and five lemon and white Basset Hound puppies are scattered across them like a spilled bag of marbles. Some sit, some lie, and one is half hidden near the doorway, all with large soulful eyes and long ears that look like folded velvet. A shoe, a laundry basket and the edge of a door give the background a lived-in feel.
Autumn is a lovely season for sniffing, and a Basset puppy will happily spend ages investigating each leaf. Their noses are among the best in the dog world, so a leaf pile is like a library of smells. Safe leaf play means watching for hidden hazards: sharp sticks, damp mold, wild mushrooms and anything left on the ground such as antifreeze. Autumn nights can be cool, and Bassets, with their short coats, may enjoy a blanket. After outdoor play, check ears, paws and skin for burrs and ticks, since their long ears gather debris. Short walks with plenty of sniffing time will suit them better than long runs, and they will be glad to nap afterward.
The leaves crunch, the air smells of rain, and five puppies sit in the middle of it all. It is hard to think of a better way to spend an October afternoon. Every sniff brings news, every leaf has a story, and there is no need to hurry.
