A Basset Puppy Rested His Chin on the Basket and Watched the Room
Resting his chin on the woven rim of a wicker basket, a lemon and white Basset Hound puppy looks off to the side with soft, worried eyes. His enormous ears hang like silky tan curtains, and a few straws stick out from the basket's edge. The room around him has a gray sofa, a plant and some clothes by the wall, lit by gentle daylight.
Basset Hounds have some of the longest ears of any breed relative to their size, and those ears can drag through food bowls and puddles. Many owners use a snood or a narrow bowl to keep them clean at mealtime, but ask your vet before trying anything new. Ear care is important because the ear canal is covered by a heavy flap, which limits air flow. Check ears weekly for odor, redness or dirt, and contact your vet if you notice scratching or head shaking. Bassets are also prone to gaining weight, so measure meals and offer a healthy diet. A wicker basket is a cute bed, but watch for chewed strands that could splinter. A soft cushion or blanket inside makes it more comfortable and safer.
He seems content to stay put and watch the room go by. Anyone wanting a nap partner will have to wait their turn. The sofa is nearby, the floor is warm, and there is no need to move until something exciting comes along.
