A Tricolor Basset Puppy Peeked Out of the Tall Summer Grass
The grass is high enough to tickle his chin, and a tricolor Basset Hound puppy sits in the middle of it with a thoughtful, slightly sideways stare. His black coat and white chest gleam, his tan eyebrows rise and his big ears drape down in the grass. Behind him, a garden doorway, a watering can and a bright red toy wagon sit among the plants.
Long grass is a treasure chest of scents for a Basset Hound, and they will spend ages following a single smell. Their long ears are said to help stir up scents from the ground, and their loose skin may help hold them close to the nose. This also means they can pick up grass seeds, burrs and ticks, which can hide in ears, paws and folds of skin. After a walk, check him over carefully and brush him out. Ask your vet about flea and tick prevention. Short walks at an easy pace suit a Basset better than fast runs, and a harness is often more comfortable than a collar. In hot weather, provide shade and water, since their heavy bodies overheat more easily. Training him to come when called is a lifelong project, so keep it rewarding.
He sits quietly now, drinking in the smells of summer. Whatever he finds next, he will find it slowly and thoroughly.
