Five Black Lab Puppies Stretched Out in a Line on the Porch Steps
Five black Labrador Retriever puppies are stretched along weathered wooden steps in a line that slopes from the top step to the bottom. The front pup has his chin on the board and his big dark eyes on the camera, while the others rest behind him with their paws folded and ears relaxed. A faded doormat, a flowerpot and the siding of the old house form the background.
Black is the most common Labrador color, along with yellow and chocolate, and the three colors can appear in the same litter. Color has nothing to do with temperament: Labs of every shade are known for being friendly, outgoing and eager to please. Because they are so people-focused, puppies like these learn quickly with rewards, but they need to be taught to be calm at doors and steps. Teach "wait" at the top of the stairs and reward them for sitting before they go down. Steep steps can be tough on tiny joints, so keep young puppies off them when possible, and use gates for safety. Labs can grow into large, strong dogs, so early training makes life far easier. Ask your vet when your puppy is ready for longer walks.
For now the lineup is calm and well-behaved. It will probably stay that way until somebody opens the door. Then five tails will start to swing, and the whole row of steps will turn into a wiggling black wave of welcome.
