Four Black Lab Puppies Make a Big Splash in the Kiddie Pool
Water sprays in every direction as four black Labrador Retriever puppies stand knee-deep in a bright blue kiddie pool. Shiny wet fur, bright dark eyes and pink tongues give them the look of puppies having the best afternoon of their lives. One pup in the front lifts a paw to slap the surface, sending up a fresh burst of drops, and a pair of slippers, a hose and a laundry basket sit on the patio behind them.
Labs are famous for loving the water. The breed was developed to retrieve game for hunters, and they have a thick, water-resistant coat and partly webbed paws that make them natural swimmers. Even so, young puppies need careful introductions. Keep the water shallow, stay within arm's reach, and never leave a puppy unattended around any pool. Offer a ramp or low edge so he can get out on his own. Make sure there is shade on hot days and a bowl of fresh drinking water, since puppies like to gulp. Dry the ears well afterward and ask your vet if you have questions about ear care, because damp ears can bother some dogs. Puppies should also finish their vaccinations before water play with other dogs, so check with your vet.
By the end of the afternoon the patio will be soaked, and four tired, happy pups will be snoring on the towels. It is a fine way to meet summer.
