The Bernese Puppies Woke Up to Fresh Snow in the Yard
Fresh snow covers the backyard, and two Bernese Mountain Dog puppies are right in the middle of it. One bounces forward with an open mouth and bright eyes, flakes still clinging to its fur, while the other leans in for a nose-to-nose greeting. Little paw prints crisscross the snow, and a woodpile and a blue bucket peek out near the fence.
Snow suits this breed, which came from the Swiss mountains and carries a thick, warm double coat. Even so, puppies are not as hardy as adults, and short outings are wise. Check their paws for ice balls between the toes, wipe them after play, and rinse off any road salt or de-icer, which can irritate skin or harm a dog that licks it. If a puppy starts shivering or lifting its paws, take it inside.
A snow day is also an easy way to burn off energy safely. Bernese puppies are playful but not as high-strung as some breeds, and they tend to enjoy gentle games with their family. Watch for ice on steps and ponds, and keep a close eye on how long they are out. Your vet can offer advice if you are unsure about cold-weather care for a young puppy.
These two look delighted. They have a whole white yard to explore, and every new sniff and crunch seems to be the best thing yet.
