The Bernese Litter Took Over the Farmhouse Kitchen Floor
The kitchen floor of an old farmhouse has become a nursery for a heap of Bernese Mountain Dog puppies. Tricolor bodies lie tangled in a cozy knot, with chins on backs and paws draped over neighbors. A weathered cabinet, a pair of rubber boots, and a basket of vegetables sit in the background, all bathed in warm sunlight.
Bernese Mountain Dogs were once farm dogs in Switzerland, so a farmhouse setting suits them. They herded cattle, guarded the property, and pulled small carts of milk or cheese to market. Their calm, hard-working nature is still part of what makes the breed such a loving family companion today.
If you are bringing a puppy into a busy kitchen, keep an eye on what is within reach. Dropped food, hot pans, and cleaning supplies can all be dangerous. Some foods that are common in kitchens, like onions, grapes, chocolate, and anything sweetened with xylitol, are harmful to dogs. Keep trash cans closed and counters clear, and contact your vet right away if you think a puppy has eaten something unsafe.
The pups are not interested in any of that right now. They are in a deep, warm, peaceful nap, and the kitchen will have to wait. Dinner preparations can wait a little while, because the kitchen already has plenty of warmth from a pile of sleeping pups.
