A Saint Bernard Puppy Yawned So Wide on the Couch
A Saint Bernard puppy sits on a gray couch with its mouth open in a huge yawn, pink tongue curled and eyes squeezed nearly shut. Its big white paws are stretched out in front, its red-brown ears hang down, and a green knit blanket is bunched at its side. Behind it, a coffee mug, a pair of glasses, and a sunny window make a snug living room.
A yawn like this usually means sleepiness, especially after play. Dogs also yawn when they feel stressed or unsure, so the setting matters. A relaxed yawn on a comfy couch is simply a sign that a nap is coming. Puppies do a great deal of sleeping, and rest is important to growing bodies, especially for giant breeds like the Saint Bernard.
Couches are comfy, but high furniture can be risky for large-breed puppies. Jumping down repeatedly can strain growing joints. A low, supported spot, or a ramp, is safer. Because Saint Bernards will eventually become very heavy, many families set couch rules early. Your vet can offer advice about growth and joint care.
The yawn is so big that it seems to include the whole room. Anyone nearby will probably catch it, and nobody will mind. Soon enough the eyelids will droop and the head will sink onto the cushion, and the quiet will settle in once more.
