The Window Was Cozy, and Two Puppies Took Full Advantage

AI imageborder colliered and whitewindowsill

On a worn wooden windowsill, two red and white Border Collie puppies are sound asleep with their faces smooshed together. Their white blazes and chestnut ears match almost perfectly, and one tiny paw is draped over the other puppy as if to keep it from drifting off alone. Soft light spills through the glass and a green houseplant sits quietly behind them.

Cats are not the only animals who seek out sunny windowsills. Dogs of every age like a warm patch to doze in, and puppies are especially drawn to cozy spots where they can rest close to a littermate. Sleeping in a pile helps pups feel secure, which is one reason a new puppy often settles better with a soft blanket, a warm spot and something that feels like company.

Red and white is one of several classic Border Collie color combinations, along with black and white and the speckled blue merle. The colors do not change a dog's personality, though. Border Collies of every shade tend to be alert, eager and very smart, and they usually do best with plenty of exercise, training games and a job to do once they grow up.

That is a worry for later. At the moment the busiest thing on this windowsill is the slow rise and fall of two small ribcages, and the only thing on the schedule is sun.
