Scout Ran Out of Energy Right in the Middle of the Rug
Flat on his side with all four paws stretched out, a black and white Border Collie puppy has surrendered completely to a fluffy cream sheepskin rug. His chin rests on the wool, his white socks stick out at odd angles, and his black ears have flopped sideways. Behind him a gray blanket, a potted plant and a basket of odds and ends frame a quiet corner of the room.
Let's call him Scout, since that blazing white stripe down his nose looks like it was made for leading the way. Border Collies like Scout are known as one of the most trainable dog breeds, and that eager brain starts working early. Even short, gentle lessons such as learning his name or a simple sit can be a fun way to bond with a pup this age, as long as the sessions stay brief and cheerful.
A deep, sprawled nap like this one is also a good sign that a puppy feels safe. Pups usually need a lot of sleep while they grow, and being woken over and over can leave them cranky. Soft surfaces help, but make sure a young puppy cannot chew off and swallow pieces of a rug or bedding. If chewing becomes a habit, talk to your vet or a trainer about safe alternatives.
Scout is not thinking about any of that. He is thinking about nothing at all, which is exactly what a very soft rug and a very full morning of play are for.
