A Pumpkin Patch Gets Four Very Fuzzy Visitors

Autumn has arrived in the garden, and four blue merle Border Collie puppies are sitting right in the middle of it. Orange pumpkins of every size are scattered around them, a rusty bucket lies on its side and the grass is dotted with leaves. The pups huddle close, wearing the serious expressions of pumpkin experts who are not quite sure what they are looking at.

Pumpkins are lovely seasonal props, and plain pumpkin is generally considered safe for dogs in small amounts, but a few precautions are worthwhile. Whole pumpkins and carved ones left outside can rot and grow mold, which is not good for curious noses, and decorations like candles, small gourds and string lights should stay out of reach. If your pup eats something unusual, a call to your vet is the safest next step.

Merle puppies like these four are a favorite at fall photo sessions because the cool gray of their coats contrasts so nicely with the warm oranges around them. Their ears are still learning to stand up, which only adds to the charm. Like all Border Collies, they will need plenty of activity once they grow, and a garden full of things to sniff is a good way to start.

One puppy has already decided that the biggest pumpkin belongs to him. The others are taking a more patient approach and waiting for something to roll.
