With his nose close to the soil and his big white paws stepping carefully, a red and white Saint Bernard puppy makes his way down the garden path. Lettuce, herbs and tomato plants grow on both sides, and he checks each one with a thoughtful sniff. Garden pots, a watering can and a shed stand in the background of a busy backyard.

Gardens are exciting for a curious puppy, but some vegetables and plants are unsafe for dogs. If your puppy eats something it should not, call your vet right away.

Saint Bernards are known for their gentle, calm temperament, even as puppies. They tend to be careful with their big feet, though a young pup can easily trample a seedling. Teaching a puppy to stay on the path with treats and praise helps protect the plants and keeps your dog safe.
