Three Saint Bernard Puppies Rolled Across the Lawn in the Evening Sun

AI imagesaint bernardlawnpuppies

Low golden light slants across the lawn, and three red and white Saint Bernard puppies are tumbling together in it. Two are nose to nose, one is rolling onto its back with big paws in the air, and all three wear happy, open-mouthed expressions. The garden behind them, with a wooden fence and potted plants, glows in the late afternoon sun.

Wrestling is one of the main ways puppies learn how to play with others. They practice biting softly, chasing and taking turns, and they learn from their littermates when a bite is too rough. Good play involves breaks, role reversals and relaxed bodies. If one puppy seems scared or keeps trying to escape, it is time to separate them for a break.

Giant breed puppies are a little clumsier than small ones, and their joints are still growing, so short play sessions on soft ground such as grass are best. Avoid hard surfaces and a lot of jumping, and ask your vet about the right amount of exercise for your pup's age. Plenty of fresh water is a must, too.

The three are far from tired. Someone has just found an ear, and the whole game is about to start over. By the time the sun drops behind the fence, they will be covered in grass and ready for a long drink, a good brushing and a very deep sleep.
