A Whole Litter Fell Asleep Inside One Cardboard Box

AI imagegolden retrieverpuppiescardboard box

The box has become a bedroom. Inside it, a litter of rich red-brown puppies is curled up in a sleepy heap, ears folded, noses tucked into whichever sibling is closest. Two are piled at the top, with their faces pressed into the cardboard, while another sprawls along the bottom with one paw stretched out. A few strands of straw are scattered around, and warm sunlight lights up the sides of the box and the pups' fur.

Cardboard boxes are a classic puppy bed because they feel like a den. A box with low sides, a soft towel or blanket, and a spot out of drafts can be a comfy place for a rest. As the puppies grow and begin to chew, though, cardboard can end up in their tummies, and they will soon outgrow the space. Replacing the box with a proper bed, or lining it with something washable, helps keep everyone safe. Wash any blankets regularly too, because puppies are tidy only some of the time.

Newborn and very young puppies can't keep their bodies warm well on their own, so sleeping in a pile matters. If you ever care for a litter, your vet can guide you on temperature, feeding, and health checks.

Not a single puppy is stirring in this quiet box. The whole litter is dreaming, and the sunlight seems to be keeping watch.
