Two Corgi Puppies Tumbled in the Grass and Nobody Won

AI imagecorgibackyardwrestling

Grass flattened beneath them, two tricolor puppies are deep in a wrestling match, and neither one is willing to call a draw. The pup on the left has her mouth wide open in a happy bark, while the other flops sideways with her white paws pushed up in a playful shove. A wooden fence and a few garden plants form the backdrop to the match.

Play fighting is normal and healthy for puppies, and it teaches them how hard they can bite and how to read one another. The best sign of friendly play is role reversal: the pups take turns chasing and being chased, pause often, and keep their bodies loose and wiggly. If one puppy yelps or tries to escape, it is time to separate them for a break.

Corgis are herding dogs, so nipping, chasing, and bumping come naturally, and they may try this on people too. Redirect nipping at ankles with a toy and avoid games that encourage rough biting on hands. Because their legs are short and their backs are long, avoid letting them jump from high places during play. Make sure outdoor play happens in a fenced yard that is free of fertilizers or other chemicals, and talk to your vet about when it is safe for your pup to meet others.

For now, this is a friendly tussle in the cool grass, and both competitors seem to be having a splendid time.
