Eggs, Avocado and Coffee on the Patio. Abuela Had a Breakfast Guest.
Breakfast is served outdoors this morning on a weathered patio table: a plate of fluffy scrambled eggs, sliced avocado, toast, a little bowl of salsa and a mug of creamy coffee. Abuela, in a blue T-shirt and floral apron with her glasses pushed up on her head, holds out a tiny piece of egg between her fingertips. Chispa sits on the cushioned chair beside her, leaning in with intense focus, nose stretched toward the morsel. The fenced backyard behind them is full of potted cacti, flowering plants and a wicker basket, all softened by a cloudy morning sky.
Sharing food with a dog is tempting, but some breakfast items are safer than others. Plain, fully cooked egg in small amounts is generally considered fine for most dogs. Avocado, however, is best kept away from dogs; the pit is a choking and blockage hazard, and the skin and leaves contain a substance that can cause problems. Salsa often contains onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs, and coffee is unsafe because of caffeine. Keep human treats small and occasional so they do not unbalance a dog's diet. If your dog has food sensitivities, ask your vet which snacks are best.
That tiny piece of egg may be the highlight of Chispa's morning. Breakfast tastes better when it is shared, even if one diner is only allowed the plainest bite.
