Every Night, Grandpa Does the Same Thing Before Turning Out the Lights
Bedtime in this house comes with a little ceremony. Grandpa Gus bends over the round gray dog bed, carefully tugging a cream-colored knit blanket up around Sunny's shoulders the way you might tuck in a grandchild. Sunny lies perfectly still and lets him fuss, her chin resting on the soft edge of the bed and her eyes drifting half closed. Nearby, a basket of rope toys sits by the window, a pair of work boots waits by the wall, and a warm lamp glows in the corner of the living room.
A dependable bedtime routine can help dogs settle down for the night, just as it does for people. Many dogs relax faster when the evening follows a familiar pattern: a last trip outside, a drink of water, a calm cuddle, and then their own spot to sleep. Labradors are large dogs, and as they age they often benefit from a supportive bed with thick padding or memory foam to ease pressure on their hips and elbows. Placing the bed away from drafts and out of busy walkways also helps. Blankets are fine for most dogs, but if yours likes to chew fabric, choose a sturdy one and watch for loose threads that could be swallowed.
There may be no bedtime story tonight, though Sunny probably would not object to one. With a blanket this soft and a grandpa this attentive, sweet dreams seem guaranteed.
