Grandpa Found the Perfect Bench by the Beach. Sunny Found the Perfect Spot Too.
Salt air, gray weathered boards, and a strip of beach grass just beyond the railing: this is where Grandpa Gus likes to spend a lazy afternoon. He sits on a sun-bleached wooden bench in shorts and his trusty vest, his reading glasses hooked on the collar of his T-shirt and a quiet smile under his mustache. Sunny presses up against his knee, her coat a bit tousled from the sea breeze, looking up at him with a happy, open mouth. Behind them, a cottage door stands open, and a pair of sandals waits on the deck.
A beach day can be heaven for a Labrador, but a little planning helps. Bring fresh drinking water, because dogs who drink salt water can get sick. Hot sand and boardwalks can burn paw pads on sunny days, so test the surface with the back of your hand and walk early or late when it is cooler. Shade is important, as Labs can overheat, especially if they are older or carrying a few extra pounds. After any swim, rinse salt and sand from the coat and dry the ears well. And check local rules before you go, since many beaches restrict dogs during certain seasons or hours.
Sometimes the best seaside plan is no plan at all. A bench, the sound of the waves, and a happy dog leaning in close make for an afternoon that needs nothing added.
