Grandma and Grandpa Rolled Out the Mats for Morning Stretches. Their Coach Showed Up.
The coffee table has been pushed aside and two green mats are rolled out on the living room floor. Ruth, in a gray tee and black leggings, reaches forward toward her toes with her glasses perched on her nose, and Frank, in a blue t-shirt, mirrors her with his arms stretched long toward his feet. Their routine has an extra participant today. Snowdrop has slid onto the front of Ruth's mat and lowered herself into a long, low stretch, front paws reaching ahead and her fluffy rear still up, golden eyes peering forward as if she's demonstrating the proper form. Bookshelves, houseplants and a cozy armchair fill the sunny room around them.
Gentle stretching is a popular way for many older adults to stay flexible and comfortable, and doing it together can make the habit easier to keep. As always, it's smart to check with a doctor before starting a new routine and to move slowly within a comfortable range. Cats, for their part, are natural stretchers. They stretch often, especially after waking, to loosen muscles and get the blood flowing. A cat who joins you on the mat is likely drawn by the soft surface and your attention, so it's worth watching where you put your hands and feet to avoid any accidental paw squishing.
Snowdrop may not count her breaths or hold her poses, but her form is undeniably impressive. With a coach this fluffy, morning stretches never feel like a chore.
