Grandpa Hank Took His First Sip of Coffee. Pewter Was Watching Very Closely.

The porch lamp is still glowing in the early morning light, and Grandpa Hank is savoring the first sip of the day. He sits on the front steps in his plaid shirt and pocket-filled fishing vest, eyes half closed with contentment as he lifts a plain white mug to his lips, his white mustache just brushing the rim. Snuggled right beside him, Pewter sits with his thick, fluffy coat puffed out against the morning chill, gazing toward the mug with polite but serious interest. Behind them, the yard is waking up, with a green watering can, potted succulents, and a wooden fence all bathed in soft blue light.

Morning coffee is a ritual for many people, but it is not something to share with cats. Caffeine can be harmful to pets, and cats are especially sensitive to it because of their small size. Even a few laps of coffee, a used coffee pod, or spilled grounds can cause restlessness, a racing heart, and other symptoms that need a vet's attention. Keep mugs out of reach, wipe up spills quickly, and store beans and grounds in sealed containers. The same goes for tea bags and energy drinks. A better way to include your cat in your morning routine is to serve their breakfast at the same time, or offer a little play session with a wand toy while your coffee cools. Cats appreciate routine, and a shared morning moment is a lovely way to start the day.

Pewter will have to settle for the view and the company, but from the look of things, that is more than enough for both of them.
