Pudding Leaned In So Close That Grandpa Gus Barely Made the Picture
The camera is all fur and amber eyes. Pudding's round face fills the foreground, whiskers fanned out and eyebrows set in a gentle frown, while Grandpa Gus sits just behind him on the porch with a tall glass of lemonade and a bendy straw. Gus's glasses glint in the sun, and the white hair around his forehead lifts a little in the breeze. Green shrubs, a railing and a pair of shoes by the door complete a lazy summer scene. Every whisker is in sharp focus, and the cat's nose wrinkles slightly, as though the lemon has been noticed and quietly judged.
Hot afternoons call for caution with a long-haired cat. Thick coats and flat faces can make a Persian more sensitive to heat, so provide shade, fresh water and a cool indoor spot to retreat to. Keep an eye out for heavy panting, drooling or lethargy, and contact your vet quickly if you see them. Lemonade is for people: citrus can upset a cat's stomach, and sugary drinks do not belong in a pet's day. A bowl of cool water is a better choice for him.
There is something lovely about a porch, a cold drink and a cat who stays close. Gus does not mind being photographed behind a very large face. Pudding is the star, and he knows it.
