Odessa Sat Down to Whittle. Onyx Followed Every Falling Shaving.
Little curls of pale wood drift into Grandma Odessa's lap as she whittles a small piece of timber with a pocketknife. She sits on the porch bench in a denim shirt and glasses, her face calm with concentration. Right beside her, Onyx sits upright with his ears forward and his eyes locked on the knife, following every tiny shaving that falls. A knitted blanket hangs over the rail, and the garden beyond is soft with green. It is a quiet, skilled sort of afternoon. Every few seconds she pauses to brush the chips away and check her work.
Woodworking is a wonderful hobby, but a workshop on the porch needs a few precautions around pets. Sharp tools, small wood scraps and fine sawdust can cause injuries or irritate a cat's eyes and lungs, and some woods and finishes are not safe if chewed. Sweep up shavings regularly and keep blades put away when you take a break. Cats are fascinated by falling objects, and a Devon Rex's curiosity can lead him straight into trouble. Give him a safe perch a little farther away, and offer a toy on a string for entertainment. If he swallows anything sharp, call your vet right away.
Odessa keeps carving, and Onyx keeps watching. The porch has never looked busier. Whatever she is making, it already has a very attentive fan.
