Gus Was Stuck on 7 Across and Domino Looked Like He Knew the Answer

The pen is poised, the toast is half eaten and Domino has taken a seat of honor. Grandpa Gus leans over a crossword puzzle at the kitchen table, his white mustache low and his green fishing vest worn over a plaid shirt. His glasses lie folded near a mug of coffee, a plate of toast and the corner of the puzzle. Beside him, the pied French Bulldog rests both paws on the table with his bat ears tall and his dark eyes watching the grid with solemn attention. A bowl of fruit and a sunny window brighten the counter behind.

Crossword puzzles are a good way to keep the mind sharp, and a pet at the table can make them more fun. French Bulldogs are known for their attachment to their people and their desire to be part of every activity, even a quiet one. Still, tables are not the best place for dogs. Keep hot drinks and food out of reach, since coffee, chocolate and some sweeteners are harmful to dogs. A dog that learns to rest his paws on the table may start to counter-surf, so a nearby cushion or a bed beside your chair is a good alternative. Pens and small items should be kept out of reach, too.

Gus fills in a word and Domino doesn't flinch. Maybe he knows seven across. Maybe he is just hoping for toast. Either way, the breakfast table is in good hands, with a thoughtful solver and an attentive assistant. When the grid is full, there will be a walk, and Domino will remind him of that.
