Grandpa Took an Evening Walk. The Silver Cat Kept Perfect Pace
Harold strolls down a dirt road with his white hair tousled by the breeze and his eyes on the ground, a soft smile on his face. Smoky trots beside him with her fluffy tail high and her green eyes alert, her silver stripes glowing in the golden light. A weathered fence post, an old blue bucket, and some scattered leaves line the edge of the road. In the distance, the sun is low and the fields are hazy, so the whole walk feels like the end of a long, good day.
Some cats take to walking beside their people as if they were dogs, though most need patient training to enjoy it. If you want to try, start with a well-fitted harness and leash indoors, with treats and praise, before heading outdoors. Maine Coons are intelligent and tend to be adventurous, which can make them good candidates. Outdoor walks should be on quiet routes, away from traffic and loose dogs, and your cat should be microchipped and vaccinated. Check her coat for ticks and burrs afterward, and bring water. Let her set the pace and sniff at her own speed. Ask your vet whether outdoor walks are right for your cat.
The road is quiet, the sunset is slow, and the two of them are in step. If there is a destination, neither of them is in any hurry to reach it.
