Grandpa Laid Out a Proper Tea Table. The Cat Joined the Guest List
The lace tablecloth is spread over the kitchen table and a china cup and a plate of cookies sit between them, a glass teapot glowing amber behind. Harold leans in with a soft, delighted expression, and Smoky sits upright on the table with her tail curled low and her golden eyes wide. Fruit bowls, baskets, and plants brighten the sunny kitchen and the whole afternoon looks gentle and unhurried. It is the sort of tea party where the guest of honor has decided to sit on the table.
Tea is not safe for cats, since the caffeine and other compounds in it can be harmful, so keep cups and teapots out of reach. The sweet treats on a tea tray, such as cookies, may contain chocolate, raisins, or sweeteners that are dangerous to pets. A cat on the table can also knock cups over, which is a burn risk. Cats like to see the action from a high perch, though, so a sturdy chair or cat tree near the table gives her a good view without being in the way. Maine Coons are sociable and often join family gatherings, so a special treat made for cats lets her feel included. Ask your vet about foods that suit your cat.
Harold clearly enjoys his guest, even if she does not use a cup. The tea will cool and the cookies will wait, and the afternoon will go on at its own slow pace.
