A gray-haired man in plaid shirt and overalls sips lemonade through a straw while a Ragdoll cat leans against him on a porch. 2 / 22

Grandpa and the Ragdoll Had the Porch Bench to Themselves

AI imageragdollporchsummer

The afternoon is warm enough that Gus has poured himself a tall glass of lemonade, a lemon slice floating at the top and a paper straw bending toward his smile. On the porch bench beside him, Juniper the blue point Ragdoll has wedged herself against his side, her dark ears perked and her gaze aimed somewhere out in the yard. Potted plants line the railing, and the trees beyond glow with soft late-day light.

Hot days call for some basic pet care. Cats generally get most of their moisture from food, but fresh water should always be available, ideally in more than one spot, and some cats like a wide bowl or a fountain better than a deep one. Thick-coated breeds such as the Ragdoll do well in shade and cool rooms on summer afternoons, so a shady porch is a smart choice. Never share sugary or flavored drinks with a pet, and keep citrus away from curious noses, since citrus peels and oils can upset animals. Talk to your vet if you ever wonder what is safe.

The nice part about a porch afternoon is how little needs to happen. Gus has his drink, Juniper has her spot, and the whole yard seems to be taking a break along with them. Some of the best company is the kind that asks for nothing and leans on you anyway.
