Grandpa Read Out Loud and the Ragdoll Never Looked Away

AI imageragdollreadingcouch

With a worn paperback open in his hands and his glasses perched on his nose, Gus reads aloud to the one listener who never interrupts. Juniper the Ragdoll sits upright on the cushions next to him, her face turned up toward his, her blue eyes unblinking and her fluffy tail curled around her feet. The couch is piled with soft throws and pillows, and the room behind them is warm and a little crowded with shelves and plants. Even the throw pillows seem to be leaning in for the next chapter, and the lamplight makes the whole corner glow.

Reading aloud to a pet is a nice habit for both sides. Cats may not follow the plot, but they often respond to a calm, familiar voice, and a regular quiet routine can help them feel secure. For the reader, speaking out loud slows things down and can be relaxing. Slow blinks from a cat are widely seen as a sign of trust, so if Juniper offers one, a soft slow blink back is a friendly reply.

Whatever the book is, Juniper is hanging on every word, or at least on every soothing sound. Gus turns the page, the cushions settle, and the afternoon moves along at a very comfortable speed. It is hard to imagine a more attentive audience. Some stories are best enjoyed slowly, and this one has all evening.
