Grandpa Walked the Pumpkin Patch and a Ragdoll Followed His Lead

Orange pumpkins lie scattered across the dirt, the vines curl through fallen leaves, and Gus strolls through them with his cap pulled low and his hands relaxed at his sides. Juniper trots beside him in the soft light, her gray-and-white tail held high and her eyes fixed ahead. A fence, a wheelbarrow, and a pile of tools sit behind them, which makes this patch look lived in. The leaves have started to turn along the edge of the patch, and the air looks crisp enough to feel from here.

Fall pumpkins are lovely, but a few precautions help pets stay safe. Plain pumpkin is generally fine in tiny amounts, but carved ones can grow moldy, and candles inside them are a fire risk for curious cats. Keep decorations and small ornaments out of reach, and watch for outdoor hazards like damp leaves and rotting fruit. A vet can tell you whether a bit of pumpkin makes sense in your cat's diet. It is a good season to keep an eye out for fallen apples and other tempting snacks on the ground as well.

Juniper acts like she is the inspector of the whole patch, stopping now and then to look at a particularly round one. Gus lets her set the pace. It is a mellow, golden afternoon, and neither of them is in any hurry to pick. The pumpkins can wait for a decision.
