A German Shepherd and a Baby Goat Pulled Up Front-Row Seats to the Hens

On the other side of the wire fence, the hens are busy scratching and pecking, and two spectators have pulled up front-row seats. A sleek black German Shepherd stands tall with its ears up and mouth relaxed in a faint grin, while a fluffy cream baby goat stands close at its shoulder, ears sticking out sideways and eyes fixed on a red hen strutting by. Behind the fence, black, white and russet chickens wander among straw, logs, a coiled green hose and a blue bucket. It is the farmyard version of watching television.

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and eager to work, which is why they have long been used for herding, guarding and service roles. They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and they generally do best with consistent training from an early age. Many shepherds have a strong prey or herding drive, so time around chickens and other small livestock should be introduced carefully and supervised. Teaching solid commands like "leave it" and "stay" helps keep everyone safe. Solid black shepherds are less common than the classic black and tan, but their temperament and care needs are the same.

For now, these two seem perfectly happy to watch without getting involved. The chickens may not appreciate the audience, but the view is clearly too good to miss.
