Wherever the Bernese Mountain Dog Goes, the Little Goat Goes Too
Wherever the big dog goes, the little goat goes too. A tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog ambles down the gravel path alongside the house, glancing back over its shoulder with a patient look, while a tiny tan baby goat with floppy ears follows close behind, hooves clicking on the stones. Rubber boots stand on the step, a blue watering can and potted plants line the wall, and a bucket and a scatter of toys rest along the path. The late-day light is warm and golden, perfect for an evening stroll.
Baby goats are herd animals and naturally attach themselves to a companion they trust, often following them everywhere. In a herd, kids learn by sticking close to older goats, so when they bond with a calm dog, they may treat it as a leader. Bernese Mountain Dogs, with their working farm background and gentle temperament, can be wonderful steady companions in this kind of setup. It is still important that young goats spend time with other goats, too, so they learn normal goat behavior and do not become lonely. Watch that the kid does not get underfoot when a large dog turns or sits down suddenly.
Some friendships do not need words, just a well-worn path and someone worth following. This little goat has clearly found its guide, and the Bernese seems happy to lead the way.
