A Blue-Eyed Birman Sat by the Basket on Duty. Inside, Everyone Was Asleep.
On duty and taking it very seriously. A seal point Birman, with a cream body, dark brown mask and ears, and deep sapphire eyes, sits upright beside a round wicker basket, both snowy white front paws resting on the rim. Inside the basket, on a soft linen cloth, a cluster of yellow ducklings has drifted off to sleep in a tight, fluffy heap. The cat gazes off to the side with an alert, watchful expression, as though listening for anything that might disturb her charges. A gray knit throw, a mug, and a potted plant fill out the cozy living room behind her.
Birmans are sometimes called the Sacred Cat of Burma, and they are best known for their color-pointed coat, blue eyes, and distinctive pure white paws, often described as gloves. They are usually gentle, affectionate, and people-oriented, and they tend to get along well with other pets. Their medium-long, silky coat is less prone to matting than some longhaired breeds, but weekly brushing still keeps it looking its best. Like all cats, Birmans enjoy having a perch where they can observe the household, and they often choose a spot close to whatever is happening.
And right now, the most important thing happening is this basket of napping ducklings. With her white-gloved paws on the edge and her blue eyes scanning the room, the Birman looks like the most dedicated babysitter anyone could hope for.
