The Siamese Went for a Drink. The Water Bowl Was Already Very Busy.

The water bowl has become the most popular spot in the house. A slender blue point Siamese cat with pale cream fur, a smoky gray mask, and striking blue eyes has lowered her head toward a shallow metal dish, while a whole ring of yellow ducklings crowds around it, bills dipped in the water. A few look up mid-sip, droplets still clinging to their orange beaks. The floor around them is warm wood, and the corner behind is cozy and cluttered with a laundry basket, folded jeans, a slipper, and a leafy plant in a terracotta pot.

Ducklings drink in a very particular way. They need water deep enough to dip their whole bill, because they use it to rinse their nostrils and help swallow their food, but young ducklings should not have water so deep that they can climb in and get soaked. Until their adult feathers come in, they are not yet waterproof and can get chilled or even drown if they get stuck in deep water. Shallow, wide containers or special poultry waterers, changed often because ducklings make a mess, are the usual solution. Cats should have their own fresh water too, ideally away from the duckling splash zone.

This shared drink looks friendly enough, with the Siamese politely waiting her turn among the splashing crowd. It is a funny, sweet little scene: one elegant cat, a dozen tiny beaks, and a bowl that will definitely need refilling soon.
