A Dachshund Met a Tiny Piglet Nose to Nose, and It Went Well
A black and tan Dachshund stands with her long ears hanging down and her nose gently touching the snout of a small pink piglet. The two have met in the middle of a cluttered room with a worn floor, a basket of blankets, and a pair of slippers by the wall. The piglet's ears stand up in curiosity, and the Dachshund's dark eyes look soft and careful, as if she is working out exactly what this new friend is. A few dusty footprints cross the floor, and the light from the doorway makes a long, narrow stripe at their feet.
Dachshunds were bred to follow scents, and a nose-to-nose greeting is a very natural way for dogs to learn about new friends. Sniffing gives them information about who someone is, and a calm sniff is generally a good sign. When introducing animals, let them approach at their own pace, keep the first meeting short, and make sure each has an exit route. Dachshunds have long backs, so avoid letting them jump from heights and always support their spine when lifting. Talk to your vet about safe introductions. Treats and praise for calm behavior help both animals link the meeting with something pleasant.
Penny seems unafraid, and the Dachshund seems fascinated. A new friendship often begins with a very quiet hello. This one looks like it is off to a lovely start. Whatever happens next, it is already sweet.
