A Fluffy Pomeranian Kept Perfectly Still While Kittens Slept on Him

On a pile of blankets, a sable Pomeranian lies with his head raised and a soft, watchful look in his dark eyes. Against his fluffy belly a litter of tiny kittens sleeps in a heap: ginger, cream, gray, black and calico, all tucked together. A gray throw, a tissue box and a heap of laundry sit in the background of the busy room.

We might call the Pomeranian Ziggy. His chest fur is thick as a cloud, and the kittens have disappeared into it so well that you can barely see where the dog ends and the kittens begin. Ziggy does not move a whisker.

Newborn and very young kittens cannot keep themselves warm and rely on their mother or another heat source, so a soft, warm spot is very important for them. A kind dog can be a helpful friend, but only a veterinarian can say whether young kittens need extra care, feeding or a heat source. Pomeranians are small, lively dogs with a thick double coat that needs regular brushing. They tend to be confident, alert and attached to their families. If you have kittens and a dog, keep the nest clean, dry and in a quiet place, and wash hands before and after touching the kittens.

Ziggy looks proud to be a pillow, and the kittens look right at home.
