A Bulldog Stood Guard While Five Kittens Tumbled Through the Leaves

AI imagebulldogkittensautumn leaves

A big white Bulldog sits at the edge of a heap of fallen leaves with his wrinkled brow lowered, watching closely. In front of him five tiny kittens, orange, black, gray, cream and calico, are tumbling and wobbling through the crunchy orange and brown leaves. A pair of green rubber boots, a watering can and a wooden shed form a rustic backdrop, and the late light glows warm across everything.

We can call the Bulldog Winston. His tan collar sits snugly under his heavy jaw, and his eyes follow each kitten as if counting them. They are small enough to disappear under a single leaf, but Winston stays calm and steady, like a patient babysitter.

Kittens start exploring at around four weeks old, and play teaches them balance, hunting skills and manners. An adult dog that is gentle and well socialized can be a good companion, but kittens are fragile, so always supervise, and let the mother cat set the pace if she is nearby. English Bulldogs are known as sweet, easygoing dogs, but their short noses make them sensitive to heat and exertion. Autumn leaf piles can hide sticks, mushrooms and mold, and wet leaves can make slippery ground, so check play areas before letting small kittens roam. Talk to your vet about vaccines and deworming for young kittens.

Winston looks happy to be on guard duty, and the kittens seem happy to have him.
