Five Kittens Rushed the Water Bowl and the Collie Made Room

The water bowl on the farmhouse floor has never been this popular. A black and white Border Collie bends low for a drink, his long muzzle just touching the surface, while five little kittens squeeze in around him. An orange one stretches up on its toes, a calico peeks over the rim, a grey tabby laps from the side, and a cream-colored kitten waits its turn with big round eyes. A laundry basket and a houseplant sit calmly in the background.

Kittens start exploring water bowls as soon as they begin eating solid food, and they can be a bit clumsy about it. A shallow, wide bowl is safest for little ones, and it should be washed and filled fresh every day. Border Collies are intelligent herding dogs who tend to keep a close eye on small creatures, which is why this one is so attentive, almost as if counting heads. When a dog meets a litter of kittens, it helps to keep early interactions calm and supervised, and to let the dog stay relaxed. If kittens seem very young or alone, a vet can advise on feeding and care.

The Collie is patient. He lets the kittens go first, shifting his weight so nobody gets bumped. Drops fall off whiskers, tiny tongues flick, and the water ripples in tiny circles. It is a quiet, ordinary moment, but five kittens and one big gentle dog have turned it into something close to a family dinner.
