A Black Pug Became the Warmest Spot Beside the Cold Fireplace
By a cold brick fireplace, a black Pug lies on a knit blanket with his round head resting low and his dark eyes half closed. Snuggled against his body are five kittens in a heap: a ginger one, a grey tabby, a black and white one, a pale cream one, and a tiny grey one in the middle. Their little faces are all tucked into the Pug's warm side. A houseplant and a basket of clothes sit nearby.
Pugs are small, sturdy companions known for being playful, loving, and eager to stay close to their people. Their flat faces mean they can overheat and snore, so keep them cool and comfortable. Kittens, who feel the cold, are naturally drawn to warm dogs, and this one makes a good heating pad. If you have a fireplace, use a fire screen and keep pets away from the hearth when it is lit, as sparks and hot surfaces can hurt them. Ask your vet for advice on keeping young animals warm and safe.
The Pug lets out a snort, and the kittens shift. He closes his eyes again. The fire is out, but the room is warm enough with the little bodies against him. Quiet settles back in, and the only sound is breathing. On some afternoons the best thing to do is nothing, and a Pug is an expert at it.
