A Beagle Lay Still and Let Five Kittens Use Him as a Jungle Gym
The Beagle has given up. He lies on a woven rug with his long ears flat and his chin low, wearing the patient look of a dog who knows he is the new playground. On his back an orange kitten is mid-climb, a grey one is perched on his shoulder, a cream one clings to his leg, and a black and white one tumbles near his paw. The afternoon sun makes the floor glow gold.
Kittens love to climb, and a calm dog makes the perfect climbing frame. Climbing builds their balance and strength, and it is normal for them to be adventurous. Beagles are patient, friendly dogs, but they are also curious and have a strong nose, so a Beagle may want to sniff and investigate every little one. Keep an eye on both the dog and the kittens, and step in if play gets rough. Always make sure kittens can get down safely, and ask your vet about safe play for young kittens.
The Beagle sighs through his nose, long and slow, but his tail gives a small wag. He does not mind. Another kitten scrambles up and lands on his ear, and the dog blinks once. It is the sort of moment where a dog decides to simply be furniture, and the kittens agree it is the best furniture they have ever had.
