A Gentle Giant and a Hairless Cat Said Hello Nose to Nose
Two faces, one black and furry, one pink and wrinkled, meet in the middle for the most careful of hellos. The Newfoundland lowers his enormous head with soft brown eyes and a calm expression. The Sphynx stretches up with her giant ears and wrinkled forehead, her nose nearly touching his. Slippers lie on the wooden floor, and a sofa with a heap of blankets sits behind them.
This sniff is more than politeness. Cats and dogs get a lot of information through scent, and a nose-to-nose greeting helps them size each other up. Slow movements and loose, relaxed bodies are good signs. If you see stiff postures, hissing, growling, or a puffed tail, calmly separate them and try again later.
A dog as large as a Newfoundland is usually gentle, but size alone can overwhelm a cat. That's why you should go slowly and give the cat a high place to retreat. Sphynx cats are often confident and curious, which can make introductions easier, though each cat is different. Because they have no fur, they like warmth, and a big, soft dog is a natural heater.
It's a quiet start to a friendship. The dog is careful, the cat is brave, and both seem to be learning something new about the other. Every great friendship starts with a single sniff.
