A Puppy Fell Asleep in the Snow and the Cat Took Charge

Snow is still clinging to the ground beside the old porch, but nobody here seems to feel the cold. A cream Devon Rex with big, wide-set ears and a rippled, wavy coat has wrapped herself around Waffles the puppy. His face is tucked against her side, his eyes closed, and one paw rests on the cat's tail. She looks off to the side with a calm, slightly regal expression, as if guarding him is her official duty.

Devon Rex cats have a short, soft, wavy coat that is thinner than most cats have, so they often love warm spots and cuddling. They are known for being social, playful and people-oriented. That also means they usually should not stay outside in freezing weather. Short and thin coats do not hold in much heat, and puppies are sensitive to cold too. In winter, keep outdoor time brief, dry your pets off afterward, and bring them back to a warm place. If you are ever unsure how much cold your pet can handle, talk to your vet.

For this one quiet moment, the snow is just a soft white backdrop. Waffles has the warmest seat on the property, and the Devon Rex gets to be the hero of the winter yard. Hot chocolate is not required, though the porch is probably only a few steps away.
